What is this course about?

Conflict can be useful: it can challenge our outdated or limited view of ways of working or expand our understanding of the world. It can be creative and help us to develop and adapt to new ways of working, or achieve change to something better, but it can also cause anxiety and division.

During conflicts, we can learn about ourselves as well as other people, find skills and resources that we didn’t realise we had, or develop new ones. This course teaches you how to recognise conflict and deal with it, whilst letting people express their views.

What will you learn?

This course will help you:

  • Identify your approach to conflict.
  • Understand how conflict arises and how to recognise it early.
  • Have an overview of different approaches to conflict resolution and mediation.
  • Practice skills that help people express diverse views.
  • Apply strategies to resolve conflicts.

Why is this relevant or important now?

When teams are under pressure, such as during the current pandemic, we should expect to see different opinions, approaches and ways of coping with change and uncertainty. Not everyone agrees on decisions and policies, and this can cause conflict.

The impact of conflict on some individuals can be debilitating for some, but others find it liberating. The same goes for organisations, depending on how conflict comes about and is managed.

Understanding how you as an individual deal with conflict, and how your team and organisation as a whole understands its differences, can help you manage current challenges and use the positive sides of conflict to your advantage.

Who is the course for?

  • Trustees.
  • Managers.
  • Staff and volunteers.
